Sports Talk

The world of sports from the perspective of a woman....and I am good at it. And, I'm usually right.
As you can see I love my Gators but, I truly have an overall affection and appreciation for the concept of competition. My first love of course is college sports....and those in my circle become fans because of me.
If it pertains to sports I have an opinion. Tune in often to read.

My Gators Preparing For The Outback Bowl

Great article on Tebow.....by Clay Travis

At the 2009 World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, I bought and wore a teal and white, Jacksonville Jaguar colors, "Draft Tebow" T-shirt. The shirt had been for sale at a local Walgreen's -- perhaps the first time Walgreen's had been directly complicit in an NCAA violation -- and I wore it at the Georgia-Florida game to gauge fan reaction. (Read that column here.)

At that time Tebow and Florida were the defending national champions and how Tebow projected as an NFL quarterback was the single most-debated issue in the Southeastern Conference. Throw open the phone lines beneath the Mason-Dixon line and you could take calls for hours, everyone had an opinion.

Generally, the Tebow haters, and they were legion, would argue that his football glory was short-lived. That he could never win a football game in the NFL. That he would have to change positions to tight end or fullback. That Tim Tebow was a system quarterback who had no future at the position.

I always argued otherwise, thinking back to the lasers I'd seen a freshman Tebow throwing in warm-ups at the Swamp in 2006. I had faith in Tebow's pro potential, argued that any team that didn't consider drafting him was foolish. And after I saw Tebow dismantle the Sugar Bowl record books en route to a 31-for-35 passing performance for 482 yards in a romp over Cincinnati. He also tossed in 51 yards rushing.

How could anyone have any doubts?

But Tebow's domination of the Sugar Bowl record book was in the future on that October day at the Cocktail Party. On that day Florida fans saw the Draft Tebow shirt and did the Gator chomp. They'd seen the Tebow, had faith in his ability to overcome any challenge.

These were in the ancient days before Tebow's statue was complete in Gainesville and before there was a plaque outside the wall featuring the speech Tebow gave after the loss to Ole Miss. "The Promise." But Georgia fans were not as enamored of Tebow. "He's a f---- fullback," screamed one fan. "He's a tight end," screamed another. "Tebow's a f---- p--y," catcalled an elegant female Bulldog.

Love him or hate him, already, Tebow was legend.

The question remained: would Tebow's game translate at the next level? Could he become a winning quarterback in the NFL? His jerseys flew off the shelf, becoming the best-selling jersey in the NFL. But Tebow stayed on the sideline. Then the head coach who'd risked his coaching future on drafting him, Josh McDaniels, was fired. At long last, Tebow took the field.

He lost his first game as a starter, against the Oakland Raiders, but on Sunday Tebow took the field as a starter for a second time. And Tim Tebow vanquished the doubters who claimed he'd never be a winning quarterback at the NFL level.
Throwing for 308 yards against the Houston Texas, Tebow rallied his Denver Broncos team from a 17-0, second-half deficit and snatched a victory many never believed would come, a 24-23 triumph.

It wasn't just that Tebow won, it's the fact that his game clearly translates to the next level. Tebow's emotional embrace of the gridiron, his infectious enthusiasm, it's all there, working on an NFL sideline just like it worked in college. Just the way that his critics long contended it wouldn't. The anti-Tebow contingent was flat out wrong, but they won't admit it yet. Already, the Tebow haters are retrenching their criticisms now that he is a winning quarterback in the NFL. Tebow, in throwing for 300 yards in just his second start as a rookie, has managed a feat that neither Peyton nor Eli Manning could accomplish in their rookie seasons. There must be a reason why they were wrong. The Tebow haters are circling, nervous, still unwilling to give up the hateful fight. They point to the Houston Texans' pass defense, currently ranked 32nd in the league.

The same people who said that Tebow would never win an NFL game, wring their hands and argue that this is too small of a sample size to prove anything. And even if it does prove anything, the Texans are awful. So what, you know, if the Broncos are also awful. That's why the Texans were favored to win this game.

Of course, those Tebow haters have already been proven wrong so now they have to move their targets, have to argue that Tebow can't do it again. When he does, they'll argue that he can't beat a team with a winning record, that he can't beat a 3-4 defense, that he can't win a playoff game, that he can't win a Super Bowl. You get the picture. Tebow haters gonna hate. And keep shifting the argument every time Tebow proves them wrong. Tebow haters will begin every sentence with, "Yeah, but..."

But every time they adjust their argument Tebow moves further down the field, powering through his haters like they stood between him and the goal line. Already the college debate that lasted for three years -- could Tebow win in the NFL?-- has shifted to, how many games can Tebow win in the NFL? The answer? A ton. Make no mistake about it, quarterbacks passing for 300 yards in their rookie season are rare, no matter who the NFL competition is.

In fact, here's a list of Super Bowl winning NFL quarterbacks who didn't manage that feat in their first year: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Drew Brees and Brett Favre.

Here's a list of Super Bowl winning quarterbacks from the past 20 years who threw for 300 or more yards in their second career start.

That would be zero.

Not a one.

And, oh by the way, Bronco fans, need a guy who also threw for 300 yards in the second-to-last game of his rookie season? Guy by the name of John Elway.

Pretty good company, right?

Mine eyes have seen the Tebow and as much as it drives his haters crazy, you ain't seen nothing yet. But what you have seen is something the haters said you'd never see, Tebow with a win as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Bernard James

I don't usually post good things about FSU. But, I love to post things about good young men. I just saw this piece on Bernard and I am completely in love. I am so proud of how he handled himself. He spoke so softly and articulated with confidence what he has been through....and the decisions he has made. This player is without a doubt one of the best things about Florida State. Congrats to you Coach Hamilton for finding not just great athletes but also, good young men and role models. His humility is obvious....and, I for one will be cheering him on at Florida State and in the game of life. Great job Bernard.

Chicago Bulls In The Holiday Spirit

FSU Beats #15 Baylor

Coach Ham and the Seminoles leave Hawaii with a successful road trip. It started with Loyola Marymount in Cali.....and then on to Hawaii where they beat home team. Then fell to Butler in a close one. I truly believe if FSU could have hit half of their open looks and in the paint baskets they could have won that one. But, they bounce back and beat #15 Baylor which, we know will look good on the resume at the end of the season. Congrats to Coach Ham for continuing to build a strong program at FSU. But, then that's just what he does. He turns programs around and make them relevant. Much luck to hometown favorite Xavier Gibson as he recovers from an injury.

Gator Rookies In The NFL

Major Wright seems to be getting a lot of playing time
with the Bears lately. And, he had a monster hit on Percy
Harvin in last Monday's Night game. I am surprised he has
done so well. He was known a monster hitter at Florida but,
I did doubt his success at the next level. Congrats Major.

I think Tebow is everyone's favorite son. He is definitely mine. I am so
pleased to see him get a start and do the most with it. I am hoping he
can win out as the starter and give the Broncos something to cheer about. And
solidify his position for next season.

David has made himself an NFL player. Although Steve Johnson
has gotten a lot of the attention, Nelson has quietly become a
go to guy with three straight games he in catching a touchdown. Here
is a great article on Nelson.
http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/23665/david-nelson-belongs-in-nfl-final-answer

Maurkice has been the biggest surprise to me. But, everyone in the NFL
is raving about how he has adapted so well to this position at this level. If he wasn't a center I think he could win ROY honors. But, to come in and supplant himself as the
number center on such a successful team is awesome to me and the rest of
Gatornation.

Even though Spikes has been suspended for the rest of season,
I hope to see him back for the playoffs. I definitely think he
has made an impact as a rookie. And, to
know that the ban substance was in his ADD medicine makes me
feel better. One of his best moments came against the Jets when
he intercepted Sanchez in that big division game.

Aaron Hernandez has been the man in New England. It seems
it did not take long for him to adapt to the NFL game. I like how the Patriots
are using him in their system. And, just like college he has been
a match-up nightmare for LBs.

Riley hasn't played that much with the first team but, he has
seen plenty of action on Special Teams. None more noticeable than
his on side kick recovery last week against the Giants.

Joe Haden with the Browns was leading tackler last week. Now
of course we can assume if a DB is leading in tackles that things
aren't going well for your team. But,
at least Haden is making lots of key stops.

Jermaine Cunningham has been somewhat of a surprise to me too.
I didn't think he would make it to the starting line-up so quickly. But,
he seems to have caught on....and Belichek is believing in this young
defense.

My apologies Carlos Dunlap for originally leaving you off. But, it seems that you
are making a name for yourself in Cincy. Two straight weeks now with sacks and increased playing time.

Happy Holidays

What Katz Had To Say About College Basketball This Weekend

1. Evan Turner was right. Last season’s national player of the year said in the spring that Ohio State freshman Jared Sullinger would be not just the Big Ten freshman of the year but the Big Ten player of the year. Well, he’s on his way. Sullinger racked up 30 points and 19 boards in an MVP performance for the Buckeyes in their 22-point win over South Carolina.

2. Josh Selby was worth the wait. Kansas coach Bill Self had said that Selby was the missing piece for the Jayhawks, a player who could make something out of nothing. Selby buried his first two 3s, hit two more along the way and then nailed his final one to give Kansas the win over USC. He had 21 points in his college debut.

3. If you don’t think Duke has a challenger, it’s time to watch Ohio State … and then catch a little bit of Selby.

4. The Josephs lived up to their preseason hype. Kris Joseph was supposed to be the go-to player for Syracuse this season. On Saturday, he scored 21 points and was the key to leading the Orange in a win over Iona and its underrated star, Mike Glover (25 points, 16 boards). Cory Joseph was supposed to be Texas’ latest star lead guard. On Saturday, the Canadian hit the game-winning bucket with 1.4 seconds to go to beat North Carolina in Greensboro.

5. No team needed a win more than Gonzaga. The Bulldogs re-asserted themselves as a team to be taken seriously with the win over No. 9 Baylor in Dallas. Gonzaga has no bad losses. But even with a monster schedule, you still have to win some of them. Meanwhile, Baylor has yet to win outside of Waco – perhaps because this was Baylor’s first game outside of Waco. The Bears will need to prove their worth in the Diamond Head Classic.

Florida Gators celebrate
The Gators finally had something to smile about after beating K-State Saturday in Sunrise.
6. Florida has to run and get the ball inside to Vernon Macklin and Alex Tyus. If it does, the Gators will be an SEC title contender. Beating Kansas State in Sunrise, Fla., was one of the most significant regular-season wins for UF since it won the 2007 national title. This team desperately needed something positive.

7. Credit Illinois-Chicago for a masterful plan in beating No. 14 Illinois. First-year coach Howard Moore should be applauded for pulling off what will go down as one of the most important wins in school history. Beating Illinois at the United Center will do wonders for UIC’s reputation in the city.

8. Illinois needs to show up with some toughness against Mizzou in the Braggin’ Rights game in St. Louis on Wednesday -- or else it could be headed for a slide. There are simply no excuses for a team this talented to lose to a 4-7 squad from the Horizon League.

9. Kansas will have a better seed than Kansas State in the NCAA tournament.

10. Ohio State will have a higher seed than Michigan State.

11. I’m not sure you would have made those predictions in October. I know I didn’t.

12. San Diego State has plenty of double-figure scoring options, and Malcolm Thomas is the latest. The senior scored 18 points and picked up 10 boards in a 26-point win against UC Santa Barbara, the same team that had just beaten UNLV on the road.

13. In the bizarre world of coaching news: Michigan State’s Tom Izzo sat out the Spartans' win against Prairie View A&M because he had a counselor at a summer camp who had an association with a recruit. Meanwhile, Kentucky coach John Calipari was thrown out of a game for the first time since he was at UMass in 1996. Calipari was ejected after arguing with the officials and getting two quick technicals against Mississippi Valley State.

14. Purdue’s JaJuan Johnson lived up to his first-team all-American potential with a career-high 31 points in a win over Indiana State. Robbie who?

15. Forget about a tournament resume for UCLA. The Bruins just needed something positive to happen and beating previously unbeaten BYU at the Wooden Classic in Anaheim couldn’t have come at a better time.

16. Michigan has now won at Clemson and blown out Oakland, just days after the Golden Grizzlies won at Tennessee. Those wins aren’t going to move the meter much, but it does suggest the Wolverines will be highly competitive in the Big Ten and not an easy out. So does last month’s narrow loss to Syracuse.

17. It was only a road win against woeful St. Francis (Pa.), but Drexel didn’t slump in the trap game between a win at Louisville and a road game at Syracuse. That’s more than can be said about UCSB and Oakland after their big mid-week upsets.

18. Central Florida should be ranked this week after beating Miami by six in Sunrise, with Marcus Jordan hobbling at the end.
Khris Middleton
Khris Middleton scored 31 for an Aggies team that's now 10-1.
19. Quick, who had UCF at 10-0 with a sweep of Florida and Miami?

20. St. Bonaventure won at St. John’s last week and took out NCAA second-round team Ohio 112-107 in four overtimes on Saturday. If you haven’t heard the name Andrew Nicholson, it’s time you learned it.

21. Texas A&M has the look of an NCAA tournament team. Beating Arkansas in overtime with Khris Middleton going for a career-high 31 is a strong indicator.

22. Cleveland State was undefeated. The Vikings aren’t anymore after losing at West Virginia. But they were in it until the final few minutes. Butler will not have a cakewalk in the Horizon this season.

23. Speaking of Butler, the Bulldogs couldn’t beat Duke but they did take down a former Dukie player and assistant as Stanford’s Johnny Dawkins saw his Cardinal lose by 33 at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

24. Just when it seemed like Richmond was going to go on a roll, the Spiders got re-routed. This time it occurred in the Bahamas as Georgia Tech won by 13 in what has to be considered a terribly disappointing result against an average ACC team.

25. Call us when Mississippi State wins a key game. If it doesn’t happen in Hawaii later this week, then it may not occur. The Bulldogs lost 88-57 to Virginia Tech, which finally won a game it needed to this season.

26. Detroit beat Central Michigan and the two leading scorers were the sons of their coaching fathers as Ray McCallum Jr., led the Titans with 23 points while Trey Zeigler led his dad’s Chippewas with 21. The McCallums won the game 75-49.

27. Presbyterian won at Auburn. Is there a worse major conference team than Auburn? (Hint: The answer is no.)

28. Although, Oklahoma could give Auburn a run (along with Oregon State, a home loser to GW on Saturday). Cincinnati beat the Sooners in Oklahoma City to go to 10-0, but without a strong schedule it’s hard to know just how good the Bearcats will be in the Big East.

29. Kennesaw State lost 99-73 to Lipscomb and hasn’t won a single game since beating Georgia Tech on Nov. 15, dropping eight in a row. So much for a momentum-changing victory.

30. Florida State avoided its trap game on the way to Hawaii by winning at Loyola Marymount. FSU had already lost twice at home (Ohio State and Florida) and couldn’t afford to drop one to LMU. The Diamond Head Classic is full of teams that need to emerge this week and show off some NCAA at-large credentials. The Noles are one of them.

Tebow Made Gator Nation Proud Today

Tebow is a Baller....congrats on a big game...too bad there wasn't a win....

Tebow on his way to the Broncos longest touchdown run by a QB.....

Gatornation has seen this a lot. Good to see it in the NFL now.

Vick And The Eagles Win!

I don't know what everyone is waiting to see with Vick. He is Ballin' to quote someone very close to me. Let me know Matt if we should keep this wait and see attitude with Vick. Second chances and making the most of them is hard to ignore.

And, it was the Giants that talked all that trash....and Vick burned them for 130 yards rushing.

Of course this took an amazing comeback. But, to be down 21 with eight minutes to go....this is more than luck by the whole team. And, just think if the Eagles WRs didn't fumbles away some of those catches.

Kudos to Vick and all the Eagles. Congrats to Riley Cooper for recovering the onside kick.

Those Gators keep making plays in the NFL. Look for a recap on all those Gators....David Nelson has scored in three straight games.

FSU Heads West

FSU plays Loyola Marymount on Saturday and then head to Hawaii for a tournament....

Here's what happen on the first leg....

Chris Singleton had 15 points Saturday night and Florida State defeated Loyola Marymount 74-63.

Bernard James had 11 points and nine rebounds in just 17 minutes, and Deividas Dulkys had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Seminoles (9-2). Michael Snaer added 10 points for Florida State, which led 51-50 with 8:36 left before going on a 15-6 run to put it out of reach.

Drew Viney led all scorers with 16 points and nine rebounds for the Lions (6-6). Larry Davis added 13 points and Vernon Teel had 12 points and seven assists.

Loyola Marymount shot 47 percent from the field, the highest total against the Seminoles this season. Florida State entered the game leading the nation in field-goal percentage defense, allowing 32.5 percent. The Lions were outrebounded for the first time all season, as FSU owned a 37-28 edge.

It was the first meeting between the schools.

Gators Over Kansas State 57-44

Good statement win for the Gators. This is toughest I have seen them play since the Horford/Noah years. They really out muscled K-State.

It didn't look good in the first half. And yes, there were entirely too many turnovers. But, this team showed me a lot. They seem to want it and they hustled. Good job Boynton. I hope this is the start of a good shooting year for you. And, good job to all the interior players.....Maclin, Young, and Tyus.

Also, it seems like Wilbekin is a player and Coach Donovan really thinks a lot of him. He is showing improvement every game.

Now, I hope we can build on this....and take this attitude to Xavier in a couple of weeks.

The Jets Are Pitiful

And, to top it off you have a strength coach on the sideline sticking his knee out. What a joke? And, this is all Rex Ryan. Quit writing a check your team can't cash.

I say the Jets don't make the playoffs. And, at the beginning of the season they had to be the odds on favorites after all the off season moves they made. Now, I know we probably wouldn't be talking about this if Holmes caught the ball. But, he didn't, and the Jets are as Deion Sanders said, "pathetic."

Go Dolphins!

Will Muschamp New Gator Coach

Everyone has texted and emailed me about the hire.....and yes, I like the hire. I must admit I wanted a offensive minded coach. Our offense was atrocious last year and I am not looking forward to them against Penn State.

But, I am happy for a fresh start. Let it be known though that I love me some Urban Meyer and I wish him well.

It looks like Muschamp will be a serious recruiter and open up the opportunity to recruit more from Texas.

I want to see who the OC is though. I think that will make or break the success of this hire.

Go Gators!!

Congrats To Cam Newton

Say what you want to say. But, he is/was the best college football player in 2010....hands down.

It's a shame his Dad couldn't be there. But, this was Cam Newton's night. And, I know many in Gatornation who are happy for him.

I won't harp on the power of second chances this time. Everyone knows how I feel about those. But, just look at what Cam did with his.

Congrats Will Mushamp and Go Gators!!!

Thanks Jeff for reading my blog.....

Matt says you are a fan of the blog and read it every Friday. So, thanks so much. And, please tell me what you think of Urban's resignation. Go Gators!!

Coach Meyer.....

I heard the rumblings of this on Tuesday night. I must say it is much easier to take the second time around. Of course, I am sad. I really liked what Coach Meyer did for the program. I really liked his whole family and his approach to life. But, obviously he is struggling with coaching, health, and wanting to be their for his kids.

So, now the program must move forward. Who do we get? Matt says, he doesn't want Coach Mullen and that we have forgotten how predictable his offense was.
Mr Miami says, "Coach Meyer is replaceable and he didn't bring all the success by himself." Thanks sir....you know I won't be talking to you anytime soon....lol! I am telling my brothers and they will be calling you.....lol!

Seriously, we in Gatornation just wish him well. Three 13 win seasons have never been accomplished by any other Div. 1 coach. We are glad you did it at Florida.

Recruits of 2011

Time to look ahead to our recruits and how they can helps get back to Gator Football in 2011. I think none are more important that Jeff Driskel, AC Leonard, and Mike Blakely. We were not consistent on offense. And, I really think there will be major changes in our approach to play calling and players in this area. I will taking a look at the big three in the coming week.

Update On Lacrosse From Gatorsports....3/20

The No. 10 Florida lacrosse team battled against a quick, aggressive Syracuse squad to defeat the No. 11 team in the country, 16-11, in front of 937 fans at Donald R. Dizney Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Gators were led by sophomore attacker Ashley Bruns (Ellicott City, Md.), who tied her career-high and her own school record with six goals while adding an assist for a season-high seven points. Florida also saw hat tricks from sophomore midfielders Kitty Cullen (Rockville, Md.) and Brittany Dashiell (Bel Air, Md.).

Sophomore attacker Janine Hillier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) tied her career high in points with four (2 goals, 2 assists), adding two draw controls. Sophomore attacker Caroline Chesterman (South Nyack, N.Y.) scored and added an assist while sophomore midfielder Jamie Reeg (Atlantis, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season.

The Gators were a perfect 4-for-4 from free position and outshot the Orange, 27-20. Florida won the battle on the draw, 18-10, continuing the Gators’ streak of winning the game when out-drawing their opponent. Chesterman and Dashiell each had a team-high four draw controls, which is Chesterman’s career high.

“The draw is so important,” Florida head coach Amanda O’Leary said. “When you possess the ball, they can’t score. Those 18 draws were critical because we needed possession of the ball. Their attackers are such threats and if you give them an inch, the ball is going in the back of the net.”
